Growth Is a Human Sport

I've spent 25 years in the rooms where growth decisions get made. Five-time CMO across companies like FranklinCovey, Globalization Partners, EnterpriseDB, Malwarebytes, Verizon, Yahoo, Telenav, and Microsoft. I've led teams through category creation, turnarounds, and scale-ups. At Malwarebytes, we doubled the company's valuation in under two years. At Yahoo, we turned a declining business back to growth.

And the one thing I know for certain: growth problems are almost never strategy problems. They're people problems – aligning executives and employees to better serve customers and prospects.

That's why I built CLG Partners.

The Problem Nobody Wants to Name

Companies don't stall because they lack ideas. They stall because their teams aren't aligned around the customer. Marketing says one thing. Sales hears another. Product builds for a roadmap nobody validated. Leadership debates strategy in quarterly reviews while customers quietly churn.

I've seen this pattern at startups and Fortune 500s alike. The symptoms vary. The root cause doesn't.

Strategy doesn't move companies. People do. And people move when they're aligned around something real – the customer, not the org chart.

What Customer-Led Growth Actually Means

Customer-Led Growth isn't a marketing framework. It's an operating philosophy. It means every function – product, sales, marketing, success, support – orients around the customer's journey, not their own internal metrics.

Most companies say they're customer-centric. Few actually are. The difference shows up in how decisions get made. Do you start with what the customer needs or with what the board wants to hear?

CLG puts the customer at the center of strategy, not as an afterthought bolted onto a deck. When you get this right, growth follows. Not because you found a clever hack, but because you built something people actually want, delivered by teams who actually understand why it matters.

Why ‘Human Sport’?

Here's what AI won't tell you: the hardest part of growth isn't the data or the tech stack. It's getting humans to work together toward a shared outcome.

I'm a competitive athlete. Trained for the Olympics – missed the qualifying times. That experience taught me something no business school ever could: peak performance is a team sport and the margin between winning and losing is razor-thin.

The same is true in business. The companies that win aren't the ones with the best AI tools or the biggest budgets. They're the ones where people are aligned, energized, and moving in the same direction. That's what I mean by ‘growth is a human sport’.

We became the dominant species on this planet not because of individual brilliance, but because of our ability to collaborate at scale. That instinct – to work together, to build together, to grow together – is what CLG Partners taps into.

The CLG Method

We don't do 12-month engagements with 200-page decks. We run a 90-day sprint built on three frameworks:

The 7As – a diagnostic that reveals where your go-to-market engine is broken. Seven dimensions of alignment that show you exactly where the gaps are between what you think is happening and what's actually happening.

SPARC – an operating framework for cross-functional execution. Strategy, Planning, Alignment, Results, Culture. It's how aligned teams actually ship.

PST – a decision-making lens (Preserve, Strengthen, Transform) that keeps every initiative grounded in what matters: the humans doing the work, the strategy guiding them, and the tools supporting both.

Ninety days. That's enough time to assess, align, and action. Not enough time to get lost in analysis paralysis or consultant theater.

Augmented Intelligence, Not Artificial Replacement

AI is changing everything about how we work. But the companies treating AI as a replacement for human judgment are making a costly mistake. The real opportunity is augmented intelligence – AI that makes your people smarter, faster, and more connected to your customers.

At CLG Partners, we help teams use AI to understand customers better, move faster, and make sharper decisions. We never lose sight of the fact that the person on the other end of every transaction is human. AI can't people. It can't build trust, read a room, or know when a customer needs to hear ‘we messed up’ instead of a templated response.

What's Next

This is the first in a series called Igniting Customer-Led Growth, where I'll go deep on the frameworks, the stories, and the real work of aligning teams around customers. Next up: a deep dive into the 7As and what they reveal about where companies actually break down.

If your growth has stalled, your teams aren't aligned, or you're spending more time in internal meetings than talking to customers – let's have the conversation.

Growth is a human sport. Let's play.
